November’s Construction Computing Awards, 'The Hammers' 2018, at the Portman Hotel in London was a lively, bubbling and enjoyable evening - not least because I (just about) managed to fit into my dinner jacket again

The evening kicked off with a champagne reception sponsored by Asite, followed by a couple of thought-provoking talks. The first was given by Christine Gausden RD FCIOB, a trustee of the CIOB and chair of the UK BIMAlliance BIM4FM Hub, who spoke to us about the importance of education, skills and the legacy we leave the next generation.

Christine was followed by Bill Hill from the Lighthouse Club, our chosen charity for the evening, who updated us on how the money raised last year was spent and the work they are doing to assist construction workers and their families affected by mental health. Many thanks to everyone who contributed this year for raising £1,252.06 on the night for such a worthy cause.

The Hammers Awards are decided by readership input on software products and companies that they feel have made the most impact on the market over the last year, alongside current projects which, because they are submitted by the companies involved, have to be judged by our panel of experts. These were of the usual highest standard and demonstrated the health of the construction industry in the most trying of times. Of interest, I might add, was the fact that a good proportion of them involved the education sector of the Industry, reflecting Christine Gausden's emphasis on its importance to the industry.

And, of course, I had the pleasure of announcing the Editor's Choice winner, which I awarded this year to Allplan, in large part for opening my eyes to the complexity and advanced tools needed to address what I had always assumed was a rather mundane and basic sector of construction engineering.
